History and Origins of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic was founded in North America in the 19th century by DD Palmer.

Lumbar, cervical and thoracic chiropractic spinal manipulation influence the spine and related tissues, spinal manipulation being the most common method used in chiropractic care."Chiropractic" is a word which derives from the Greek words "cheir praktos" which translates to Hand Done or, Done by Hand. It was chosen by the founder of chiropractic, Daniel David Palmer. Using his extensive study of anatomy and physiology, Daniel Palmer’s expanded the health field with the science of Chiropractic by compiling a methodology based on various forms of manipulation which had been employed for possibly thousands of years.

Palmer's work was the first development of a scientific practice to explain those effects. In September 1895, Palmer performed his initial chiropractic adjustment to a man who was experiencing deafness after experiencing issues with his back. After examination, Palmer manipulated what he believed to be a misplaced vertebra in the patients upper back which led to an improvement in the patient's hearing. From there, Palmer's research and practice grew.

Spinal manipulation is generally regarded as cost-effective treatment of musculoskeletal conditions when used alone or in combination with other treatment approaches, using spinal manipulation for the treatment of sub-acute or chronic low back pain.

The Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique

The Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique is a specific system of analyzing and adjusting the upper cervical vertebrae of the spinal column. These vertebrae can misalign in such a way as to interfere with the brainstem and spinal cord as they exit through the floor of the skull into the neural canal. Special attention is given to the first two cervical vertebrae, the atlas and axis, as they are the most freely moveable vertebrae in the spinal column and the ones most commonly misaligned.

Diversified and is used by approximately 96% of chiropractors for approximately 70% of their patients and is also the most taught technique for chiropractic students and involves quick movement thrusts with the objective of restoring proper alignment of spine and joint dysfunction.
